Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to one year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience within the last 3 years involving the regular operation of a school bus on public streets and highways.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of a valid California Special Driver Certificate for School Buses with valid first aid certificate, if required.
• Possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license with passenger endorsement.
• Possession of a valid D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) approved medical certificate. (Any moving citations or chargeable accidents in the applicant's driving history within 37 calendar months prior to the application date will be evaluated and may be considered disqualifying.)
• Personality and character traits suited to supervision and care of children of multiple ethnicities and cultural values, behavioral, and physical handicaps.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO BECOMING A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER?
1. How do you apply for the school bus driver training program?A - Download and complete the application and return it to Transportation Services. It can be found by clicking here.

2. After your application is reviewed you will be invited to an Orientation.The orientation consists of a basic skills exam and a physical agility test, and a review of your driving record. If you are successful on each section you will be scheduled for the next training class. You will be instructed on what to bring to the orientation.
3. Start Classroom Training You will receive instruction on how to get your CDL and School Bus Certificate. Once you pass the final exam you will be scheduled for behind-the-wheel training. (Classroom instruction is 45 hours.)
4. Behind-the-Wheel Training(BTW)You will be taught by our State-Certified Instructors on how to safely operate our vehicles. Once you complete your training, you will be scheduled for testing with the CHP. (BTW training is approx. 40 hours.)
5. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Written Tests You will be tested on Rules & Regulations and First Aid. All of this information will have been covered during your classroom training. Once you pass both exams you will be scheduled for your CHP drive test.
6. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Drive Test This is just what it sounds like. You get to drive a CHP officer around the city until he/she is satisfied that you can safely operate the school bus you are driving.
7. Your School Bus Certificate After successfully passing your drive test, the Officer will hand you your temporary school bus certificate. You are now a licensed school bus driver. Congratulations!
8. Apply to be a School Bus Driver or Substitute School Bus Driver Once certified as a School Bus Driver, you may apply for a salaried and fully benefited position with paid holidays, sick leave, vacation leave, CalPERS retirement, and FULLY paid health/dental/vision benefits for you and your qualified dependents.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, operate and maintain a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to and from assigned locations using designated routes; assure vehicle safety by performing daily safety inspections and cleaning duties.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation; transport students to and from school, special events, and field trips. E
• Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops; escort children across streets or roadways, stopping traffic as necessary; report incidents or conditions affecting the safety of students as appropriate. E
• Maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections including cleaning windows, mirrors, and bus interior and exterior; check and maintain fuel, oil, and water levels; check brakes, brake lights, wheel chair lifts, and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel. • Inspect wheelchairs and car/safety seats for safe transportation of students, toddlers, and infants; report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel. E
• Instruct students on safe riding procedures; maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with District policies. E

• Maintain electronic data collection, such as daily pre-trip inspection, daily mileage, student count, and school bus routing. E

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Bus Driver – The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transport of students along designated routes, ensuring proper student behavior and vehicle safety.
Behind the Wheel Instructor – The Behind the Wheel Instructor is responsible for training bus drivers in safe and defensive driving techniques and performs the duties of a Bus Driver as assigned.
Driver Instructor – The Driver Instructor is responsible to plan and carry out training activities for prospective, substitute and current Bus Drivers that adheres to State requirements.
In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
Effective July 1, 2020, all new employees to Poway Unified School District will be responsible for the fingerprint fee associated with new employee processing at the cost of $74 - cash/check ($76 for credit cards).

You ll be responsible for:
• Safely transporting passengers in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner throughout the service area
• Assisting in the boarding of passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility aids and properly secure wheelchairs and scooters

• Have good verbal communication skills
• Are at least 21 years old
• Have held a valid driver s license for at least 3 years
